Google raises by 5% the search engine ranking of sites with SSL certificate

The Internet is evolving. Concerns about the privacy of personal information have united organizations in a movement that advocates that all Internet traffic be encrypted. To promote this initiative, Google announced in August 2014 that SSL would be used as a ranking factor in search results.

Google usually does not disclose what factors are included in its ranking algorithm – it’s a well-guarded secret. But Google has revealed this small component of its algorithm. Of course, you still need interesting content, a user-friendly site and many other things, but having SSL already affects rankings. A 5% increase in ranking with an SSL certificate can be the difference between showing up on the first page, instead of the second, in search results.

“That 5% in ranking could be the difference between showing up on page one or page two.”

Always with SSL

To get the most out of your SSL certificate and increase your site’s ranking potential, it is important to enable SSL encryption for all pages on your site. Often sites only use HTTPS on pages that need it – don’t do that. Google provides results based on page-by-page analysis, not your site as a whole. It displays the most relevant page. Therefore, to get the added benefit of having SSL as a ranking factor, it should be used on all pages. You can have a really great publication on a specific topic that works really well on its own, but it won’t get promotion from SSL if that page is not passed through HTTPS.

Keep in mind that you do not need a separate SSL/TLS certificate for each individual page. One certificate can protect the entire site – every page. It all comes down to how you set up your server and whether you have the right security solution. If you have multiple sites, you need to make sure you have a Multi-Domain certificate. If you have subdomains such as mail.website.com or login.website.com, you need a Wildcard certificate. But, as long as you have the right SSL solution, your site (or sites) can be protected with a single certificate.
